BRONX HEROES 1.0/ CUP 'O' JAVA STUDIO
THE MIGHTY PRETENDERS # 1. Written and drawn by Ray Felix. Meet The Mighty Pretenders as they take on the misguided third term President turned Emperor, George Bush and Commander Cheney, who have taken over Democracy by putting us in a long term war with Iraq and Afghanistan. Join Coffee Joe and his band of " Left Wing Super Heroes", as they prevent an oncoming invasion with Iran and Syria. Originally written and illustrated in 2001-2002 as a political Black Comedy. Ray Felix has coined ,"The Mighty Pretenders, as the book that saved his sense of humor and help rehabilitate his soul after two and a half years teaching at Rikers Island". The Mighty Pretenders was written in response to the media frenzy post 9/11. It gave Ray Felix the strength to continue living in New York City, after the attack of the World trade Center on 9/11.
BETWEEN THE PANELS- Originally, "The Bronx Heroes" was intended to be an adult anthology comic for mature readers when originally conceptualized by Ray Felix, Lou Gonzalez, Chris Duckett and Mike Klein. That changed as the project got closer to print and additional artistic contributors were against adult humor. Ray Felix decided that "Bronx Heroes should be a softer more kid friendly book" after all artists and writers voiced their concerns and the group of artists took a vote.
Though "The Mighty Pretenders", never made it into the pages of Bronx Heroes#1, the original work it did appear at the first BronxHeroes Comic Con art gallery exhibit, "Dream Sequence". The feature that replaced "the Mighty Pretenders" was "Runaway Slave", an short story written by Ray Felix.
